I have joint CC accounts with my soon to be x-husband. We are getting a divorce and he was the main person on a lot of the CC accounts. We divided up our debt and he is responsible for paying most of it. However, there are large unpaid balances on my Credit history. Should I go ahead and cancel the ones I am not responsible for? How will it affect my credit.Joint credit card Accounts- in Case of divorce what do?
Unfortunately you can still get in a HUGE mess because your name is on these cards. Even once you are divorced, if he quits paying the bills (and your name is on them) your credit will be severely impacted. You may want to try to have it in your divorce decree that he will have all of those cards transferred to cards in his name only within 30 days (or so). If the cards are in your name, he isn't exaclty going to motivated to pay them off. Try to have as much as you can transferred into his name alone. Close any others that are joint.Joint credit card Accounts- in Case of divorce what do?
Tell your soon to be ex you want to close all accounts that are joint and reapply under his name only. You should also request your free credit report from annualcreditreport.com or call them toll free @ -877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. Better to be safe than sorry later.
as your x pays--close account.
