2 things you can do via software, but if the driver is not installed, it may appear that you do not have a sound card even if you do:

1) go to your device manager and look for audio devices

2) go to sound properties in control panel and see what (if any) audio device is selected

1 thing you can physically check:

the sound card plugs into the motherboard and butts up against the back of the PC, just like the video card. If you have a place to plug in the monitor, then you have a video card. Likewise, if you have a place to plug in speakers or headphones, then you have a sound card.

Lastly, it's not that hard (usually, especially on newer models) to open the case and peek inside. You would be looking for a small computer board plugged into the mother board, butting up against the back of the machine, usually near your video card (the one with the monitor plug).

Here is an example of what a sound card might look like:

Right your 'My computer'

choose Properties. Then click the 'Hardware' tab.

There should be a button that says 'Device Manager'

look at the back for microphone jack, or speaker jack, it's usually a small green hole. at the back
Yeah! look for the small green hole at the back of your PC and plug in the ear phones, try listening to a song and you'll know!
look in the hardware device list ... right click ';My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device manager'; it will be listed under Sound, video and game controllers, or Other
